By this means during the last few rears a number of goat dairies some of them devoted largely to chee?e production pro-duction have- been built up In dlffer-unt dlffer-unt parte of the United States. And recently, re-cently, on the Government experimental experi-mental farm at Bcltsvllle, Md., "Tog-genbergs," "Tog-genbergs," from Switzerland, have been utilized as sires with really remarkable re-markable results. The Toggonberg is an especially prepotent" animal, and hia kids (by common does) show the color and markings of the father brown, with a white stripe down each side of the face. Many thousands of goats, old and young, are annually slaughtered In this country and sold for mutton or lamb. It Is hardly possible for the consumer to tell the difference. Doubtless Doubt-less every one of us has often eaten kid under the impression that it was lamb. In the southern States the baby goat is considered a delicacy In which light, indeed, it has been regarded by epicures since biblical times and much earlier. An important reason why goat milk le recommended for infants is that it is free from tuberculosis germs. Apparently Ap-parently it contains certain "antibodies" "anti-bodies" that are deadly to the tuberclo bacilli. This discovery has led recently re-cently to the experimental use of the milk for the purpose of producing in Infants an immunity to tuberculosis a result which, if obtainable, will bo a most substantial blessing to the human race |
