Show GERMMSDMM Three Times Huns Attempt to Capture La Vaquerie and Meet Repulse. BRITISH HEADQUARTERS IN FRANCE, Dec. 3. The first attack made by the Germans yesterday at La Vacquerlc was begun late in the day, accompanied by heavy artillery, machine ma-chine gun and rifle fire. Driven back, the Germans twice more attempted to capture the town, each time with similar sim-ilar results. There was little change in the situation at Masnieres today, the Germans having occupied the town yesterday after the voluntary withdrawal with-drawal of the British on Saturday to dispense with the sharp salient which bulged out about the town. British artillery ar-tillery last night continued to make Masnieres a most uncomfortable place to hold and the Germans were making all possible use of the catacombs under un-der the town for cover. The British straightening operation was carried out while the Germans were still "in a state of some disorganization, disor-ganization, after having been forced from Les Rues Vertes, a southern suburb su-burb which they captured Saturday afternoon and held for a brief time. As a result the British withdrew in good order. r l t.. n i --t.l a small but important operation south of Bourlon village last night in which the British reoccupied a section of trench on high ground which the Germans Ger-mans had retaken in their push of Friday. Fri-day. The British previously had regained re-gained virtually all their old line west of Bourlon wood and the trenches recaptured re-captured Friday. Fighting continued about Gonne-lieu Gonne-lieu which the British recaptured. |
