Show I- iIWi Jess Willard picked Carl Morris to win over Fred Fulton. The champion never did have a very high opinion of Fulton's fighting, though his manager, man-ager, Tom Jones, was trying over a year ago to make the public think that Fulton was the man to meet Willard. Eastern sporting men are responding respond-ing very well to the call for aid sent out in behalf of Peter Maher. Billy Gibson, who was made treasurer of a . fund started for the old Irish fighter, recently sent $7G to Peter Burns, a lifelong friend of Maher, who is looking look-ing after his interests. After Gibson sent the $75 he had S3G9.50 left In the fund. Among the recent contributors were John McCormack, the Irish tenor, who sent his personal check for $50. McCormack's secretary sent $25. Biddy Bishop writes from Cincinnati that his middleweight, Billy Weeks, who recently defeated Tommy Ferguson, Fergu-son, has gone to Scranton, Pa., for a bout. With Weeks as sparring partner part-ner went George Christian, the negro heavyweight, who is well remembered here. Bishop will join Weeks at Scranton Scran-ton in a few weeks and in May the two will start for the Pacific coast. The introduction of boxing into the public schools of Australia by Snowy Baker has met with so much success that the promoter of the big Sidney stadium is finding it a hard matter to take care of the youngsters. As a result re-sult of all tho boxing in schools and other places there are hundreds of boys in the lighter classes, whereas a few years ago it was almost impossible impossi-ble to find boxers of any class under the 126-pounders. Now they can boast of many stars in the flyweight and bantamweight classes. The military authorities havo also taken the matter upand urge the young men to follow boxing, as it is a splendid means of keeping them in condition for military services. Owing to the many youngsters young-sters taking up the sport, Baker has arranged a new set of weights so as to give all of them a chance to take part in the Weekly tournaments at tho big stadium. The weights are as follows: fol-lows: Heavyweights, 175 pounds and over; mid-heavy, 175 pounds; middleweight, mid-dleweight, 1G0; welterwoight, 147; lightweight, 135; featherweight, 126; bantamweight, 118; flyweight. 112; paperweight, pa-perweight, 98, midgets, 91; grease spots, 77. |
