Jacqueline Channing, her name affectionately affec-tionately shortened to "Jack," is the daughter of King Channing, a prosperous prosper-ous turfman. Jack's mother died when the girl was born. King Channing had most desired a boy when Jack arrived, and ho accordingly raised his daughter as a boy. Sho was tho apple of her father's eye, and greatly popu lar with Channing's intimatps. Thus she had grown to bo sixteen, always dressing In boy's clothes. While rambling through the woods one afternopn she met Bob Ridgeway, son of Channing's nristocratic neighbors, neigh-bors, and there was an acquaintance then formed that was destined t0 be the ruling force In jack's life. Shortly Short-ly after this incident, King Channing suddenly died. Tlis will bequeathed his fortuno to Jack, to be held in trust, with her to maiden aunts as guardians of the girl, until she shall become of legal ago or shall marry. Life with Jack's maiden aunts is almost al-most unbearable for the spoiled child. They finally decide that she shall be sent to boarding school, and for a time, in her new surroundings ("being now properly dressed In girl's clothes) Jack is contented. But tnc restraint finally palls upon her and sho runs away from school, determined to make her own living. She finds board and lodging with a woman who has, as another paying guest, a girl who has just left a position in the office of Ridgeway & Son. Jack is advised to Immediately apply for tho position. This she does and is given employment. employ-ment. Tho affairs of Ridgeway &. Son havo been going from bad to worst. Finally Final-ly they aro nearly at tho point of disaster, dis-aster, when matters take an unexpected unexpect-ed turn. There is a valuable piece of mining property they can secure at a great bargain. Bob Ridgeway goes West, and secures from the owner own-er of the property his promise to sell at a definite figure but Bob cannot secure an option. The secrets of Ridgeway Ridge-way & Son have been "leaking" through the contemptible conduct of a chief clerk who tells to a rival firm the information he cunningly contrives to secure That Ridgeway & Son want to buy the coppor property becomes known to their business rivals, and tlm Ridgeways must act quickly If thev shall swing the deal But the Ridge-ways Ridge-ways are lacking in funds. Jack Channing has a plan, and proposes it to Bob. They shall immediately marry mar-ry and draw enough of Jack's fortune to pay for the property. The proposal is so daring that it fairly lakes Bob's breath away but ho has loved the girl from tho day he met her in the woods, and ,shc has likewise loved him. Bob and Jack marry, but when it comes to going West with the money to close the deal the elder Ridgeway is so ill and nervously broken down that Bob cannot leave him. So Jack makes tho trip and by daring riding and fast work beats tho Ridgeway's rivals to the property and secures the deed. When Jack returns home the elder Ridgeway is restored to health, largely a result of Jack's cleverness in saving the firm from bankruptcy.
