Show WILD JUMP IN WHEATMARKET Quotations Take Perpendicular Leap to $2.12 a Bushel on Government. CHICAGO. April 7. The appearance of a supposed sea raider followed by a pessimistic government crop report caused wild fluctuations in the wheat market hore today., At ono point May wheat sold at $2.12, 6 to 6 3-8c higher than tho previous close. Opening sales were made at $2.07 1-2 to $2.0G 1-2. The appearance of the raider caused a drop to $2 04 7-8. Then, on the crop report, re-port, quotations made a perpendicular leap to $2.12. It was only this week that May wheat, responding to private estimates of crop damage, marked an epoch in prices by selling at $2. Yesterday was a holiday on the board of trade, but Thursday May wheat closed at $2.05 5-8. Tho opening today touched $2.07 1-2 and this war followed by a decline of $2.04 7-8 on the appearance of the sea raider. Then came tho government gov-ernment report and the market made an almost perpendicular Jump to now records. May sold to $2.14 and fluctuated fluctu-ated wildly, a half and a full cent at a time around that level. Within an hour astonishing further advances had boon made, carrying the prices for wheat soaring as much as 13 3-4 c above Thursday's closing figures, fig-ures, with the chief rise In the September Sep-tember option, which touched $1.75, with July simultaneously at $1.88 and May at $2.14 1-4. At tho same instance prices were as much as 2 cents apart for the same option in different parts of tho pit. Corn soared with wheat. Tho volume vol-ume of business as in wheat waB Immense Im-mense The advances, though, were not so radical as in wheat, being limited lim-ited to about 4 cents whon wheat was up nearly 14 centB. Oats reflected only a comparatively! slight degrco tho upward action of other oth-er cereals. Extreme gains were about half as much as in corn.
