Show FIVE MEN ARE TO IN BA1LR0ADS War Measures Extend to the Transportation Lines of the Country. WASHINGTON, April 11. Heads. of the principal railroads in the United States meeting hero today at tho call of the Council of National Defense, named a board of five men to direct the operation of American railways throughout the war. It was announced that the purpose of the board would be to give the government tho best possible service not only In transporting troops and military supplies but in handling every necessary commodity. Members of the board are: Fairfax Harrison of tho Southern, chairman; Howard Elliott of the New Haven; Samuel Rae of the Pennsylvania; Pennsyl-vania; Hale Holden of tho., Burlington, Burling-ton, and Julius Kruttschnltt of the Southern Pacific. Daniel Willard, president of tho Baltimore & Ohio, chairman of tho defense council's advisory committee, will be an ox-officlo members of the board, and the interstate commerce commission will be asked to name another. an-other. In the United States, however, the railway systemB will operate in co-operation with the government, instead of under Its direction. The railway association's defense committee as it exists now in the four existing military departments, already has worked out plans for military co-operation with the army. |
