Show co SENATOR FAMOUS AS AUTHOR OF THE W00TT0N BILL Senator J. H. Wootton, author of tho famous Wootton state-wide prohibition prohi-bition bill, which created all kinds of excitement near tho end of tho last state legislature, Is a visitor in Ogdon, Og-don, arriving from American Fork, this morning, and attending the Manufacturers' Man-ufacturers' luncheon at noon In the Weber club. Senator Wootton was tho center of attention after the luncheon and among other questions put to him was this one: "How do you feel over the governor withholding your bill at tho close of the legislature?" "Well, I have no Tegrets. I believe Governor Spry 'did the right thing. I was for prohibition and started out enthusiastically to champion the cause, but as J. got deeper into the subject, I found peculiar conditions existed in Utah, and finally I discovered discov-ered that radical legislative action threatened to bring on old political discords. Furthermore, 1 became converted to the idea that the whole subject should bo referred to the people. peo-ple. "There Is a larger issue before us now, and that Is one of good government, govern-ment, and I sta.nd with Governor Spry In his firm defiance of thoso who would intimidate the state government govern-ment of Utah by threats to burn and kill if tho maudatcs of the courts in tho Hillstrom case are carried out. "The governor has grown considerably consid-erably in my esteem and I havo como to recognize in him a big, thoughtful, fearlesB man. I even feel that wo legislators proved somewhat cowardly in our treatment of him, but, with the undue responsibility which we placed on him, he showed himself courageous courage-ous at least, and gracctully became the 'goat,' "What do you think, of Ogden?" was another question propounded. "Well," said the senator, "I am an admirer of your city, your enterprise, your co-operative spirit Politically, you know, 1 am for tho protection of home Industry, and being so constructed construct-ed cannot avoid admiration for a community where that principle has been so well exemplified as In Og den. This is becoming the manufacturing manufac-turing center of the state, and I never come here without feeling how far short my own town and county have fallen in this onward march of industrial in-dustrial progress which is making Ogden Og-den the best city in the intermoun tain country." |
