Attorneys At-torneys for the three "Western Fuel company officials who were refused a new trial last night and sentenced to varying prison terms for conspiracy conspira-cy to defraud the government out of Import duties on coal, began preparations prepara-tions today to carry the caseB to the United States circuit court of appeals, James B. Smith, vico president and general manager was sentenced to IS months In San Quentin prison and to pay a ?5000 fine. Frederick C. Mills, superintendent, was sentenced to 18 months in San Quentin. Edward Ed-ward H, Mayer, a checker, was given a year in tho Alameda county jail. The men wore permitted liberty over night on their old bonds. A hearing to find now bonds, pending pend-ing the appeal, was hold today. |
