Show HUGH C, WOOD BACK FROM ill CAPITAL Hugh C. Wood returned yesterday from an extended business and pleasure pleas-ure trip east. While away, he made a visit of several sev-eral days In Washington, where he went for the purpose of asking the national officials for a square deal for stockmen and homesteaders alike in the matter of public lands. In regard to this question, Mr. Wood said that there wero two bills now being considered by congress, in I eluding the Kent bill to turn the eu tire public domain over to the agri-. cultural department.. This bill provides pro-vides for 10-year leases to stockmen and would at the same time permit homesteaders to come In and operate claims while tile leases were still In existence. Such a condition, he believes, be-lieves, would be manifestly unfair to the stockmen. The Furgeson bill provides for a ClO-acre grazing homestead home-stead and does not require the homesteader home-steader to live on his claim. That bill, Mr. Wood said, Is tho most satisfactory sat-isfactory one. It provides for the classification of land for grazing aud agricultural purposes and permits leasing of grazing land to stockmen. |
