Show I TAFT REFUSES BIG SUM FOR CLUB Chicago, HI., March 20. Charles P. Taft of Cincinnati, who announced Wednesday night he would retain his controlling interest In the Chicago National league baseball club, for at least a year, refused an offer of $770,-000 $770,-000 for his holdings, according to J. T. Conncry, who attempted to purchase pur-chase the Cubs for the Connery-Spiu- Igel syndicate of this city. Mr. Con-nery Con-nery did not state the price asked by Mr, Taft for his stock, though 5875,000 was mentioned as the figure. "It was at Mr. Taft's solicitation wo mot him," said Connery. "Our 'final bid In Cincinnati was $750,000 nnd we had with us there a certified check for $25,000 to bind the deal. "When we met in Chicago two days ago, Mr. Taft said he already had spent quite a little money in buying uniforms and sending the club south to training quarters. These expenditures expen-ditures amounted to moro than $15,-000 $15,-000 and for good measure we Increased Increas-ed our offer $20,000 so that our final offer was $770,000. "Although Mr. Taft reduced his fig-1 ure a trifle, we still were far apart and there the matter ended." .Mr. Connery said the syndicate had held a satisfactory option on tho stock held by Mr. Ackerland of Pittsburg, vico president of the club. |
