It was stated at the meeting of the board last night that thero are forty homos in the vicinity of the crossing and that the trainmen so operate the cars that the lives nnd property of ! the Inhabitants are jeopardized. Tho residents claim that long trains of cars are left standing on tho crossing at night for hours at a time, making it impossible for the people to .got to or from their homc3, and that In cases of sickness on more than one occasion occa-sion it has boen quite Impossible fo get a physician to the homes at the. proper time. Tho petition for an arc light on Herrick avenue was denied, it bolng, stated by tho light commissioner that) it was not necessary to have a light at that point. The city auditor's report, which was filed with the board yesterday, was referred to the sujxsrlntendent of finance. fi-nance. The city engineer reported that he had Investigated the condition of the sidewalk on Douglas avenue, complained com-plained of by property owners, and that he had discovered" that the walk was not defective. The ongineor stated, stat-ed, however, that slight repairs were made on the walk and that at this time it is all that could be expected of the contractor. The claim of the city treasurer for S1.390.SS. the amount due for paving Grant avenue on the frontage of the Postofflco building, was referred to the superintendent of finance and public affairs.
