Show SPEAKING PIECES. By Tudor Jenks. I hear of modern standard in literature litera-ture and such, But during all my lifetime I haven't met with much That's hotter than the kind of things old readors used to give Tho speeches and tho poetry and tho "bits of prose that Hvo." Old Spartacus, Virginlus and the dying dy-ing Gladiator, Storn Brutus and pale Casslus, tho lean and hungry hater; That old moss covered bucket in the cool and darksome woll, "Yc Call Mo Chief," and other stuff that used to sound so swell. You felt cold chills run down your back and Bat with bated breath When Jimmy Green declared his choice for "Liberty or Death." Or when Philander- Tucker would thrill us with the othor Whore starving children begged for Corn just three grains from their mother. And, Oh, how humorous the end or that delightful jest Concerning the cucumber with some ono "can't digest," Who failed to shiver when those awful aw-ful "breaking waves dashed high," Or didn't choked when Wlnkelried taught heroes how to die' Do thoy have 'Declamation" still? Do infant victims blush. Advance and how and clear their throats amid that dreadful hush? And Is there still -a "burning deck"? Does curfow fall to ring' Does Robert, proud of Sicily, Insist, "I am tac king!'? Or has "improvement's" vandal hand sWen"t all those things away, With 'Prosody'" and hounding states' and all such things passe Porhaps 'tis best there should ho change, uow wrno fill bottles ; now; ' But In tho 'old red school houses" tho Daniel Websters crew!
