Show LOSS OVER ; A MILLION . Fire Walls Help Confine a Big Fire in New , ;York New York, an, 17. The seven-story warehouse of the Terminal Storage company, occupying a full city block near the North river water front, between Twenty-seventh and Twenty-eighth Twenty-eighth streots, and containing merchandise mer-chandise valued at more than $10,000,-000, $10,000,-000, was swept by fire early today. The fire was discovered a few minutes min-utes after midnight It was not under un-der control until 0:45 o'clock, when the loss was estimated at $1,250,000. Flye alarms sounded In quick succession suc-cession summoned to the Bcene practically prac-tically ever,) available piece of fire-fighting fire-fighting apparatus from all Manhattan, Manhat-tan, and this was reinforced by fire fire boats. Tho Terminal Storage company's warehouse was of brick and concreto and was regarded as one of thc most modern buildings in that part of the city. It was the. largest structure of its kind in New York. While the building build-ing Itself was" fireproof and protected by fire walls, sprinklers and all thc modern fire preventions and fire fighting fight-ing apparatus, its contents, consisting mostly of goods awaiting delivery to the big New York department stores, were naturally of the most inflammable inflam-mable nature." The building was divided di-vided Into four sections by fire walls two feet thick. One of the sections was controlled by Joh'n Wanamaker and contained merchandise consigned to him. Another section was rented by Gimbel Bros , while the two remaining re-maining sections had as tenants nearly near-ly fifty Bmaller firms. The firo started in the Wanaraaker compartment and worked its way thrpugh the fire wall to the Glrabel section. Both these sections were destroyed de-stroyed but the fire walls between them and tho other compartments held firm and the loss Is therefore confined to the two firms named. Thoro was no loss of Me, but two firemen were seriously injured. |
