Show ISCiLARSHfPFOR UTAH STUDENTS The Ave Thompson scholarships, of the annual valuo of $G00 each, are offered to young men and women, residents res-idents of Utah, by tho University of California. Applications for these scholarships for the year beginning July 1 next must be In the hands of the recorder of the faculties of the University of California, at Berkeley, on or before February 29, 1912. These scholarships lor Utah students stu-dents were endowed by Mrs. Jennie D. Thompson of Salt Lake. By her ivill, which was probated in 1907, she vd in endowment to be known as the Willard D. Thompson Memor-.. Memor-.. . a, iut income to be used for scholarships at Berkeley In memory of her son, Willard Thompson, who graduated from the University of California In 1S95, and who died ten years after his graduation. Application for scholarships must have completed at least a four years' course In some high school or other secondary school of recognized standing. stand-ing. Applications will be received from the members of the graduating classes of the current school year, as well as from high school graduates of former years who may or runy not have continued their studies in colleges col-leges or universities. Applicants must be possessed of sound health and good moral character. Among applicants appli-cants possessing these qualifications selection will bo made upon the basis bas-is of scholarly work and promise. While the appointments will bo for one year, Thompson Memorial Scholars Scho-lars may be reappointed at the discretion dis-cretion of the University Application Applica-tion blanks for these scholarships may be obtained by addressing the recorder of the faculties, Berkeley, or from the president or principal of any Utah collego or secondary school. The successful applicants for these scholarships may pursue at Berkeley studies in the colleges of letters, social so-cial sciences, natural sciences, commerce, com-merce, agriculture (which Includes the University farm, at Davis), mechanics, me-chanics, mining, civil engineering, chemistry and medicine. Courses are given also in law, dentistry, pharmacy, art, and a professional training in astronomy. Among the departments of instruction instruc-tion at Berkeley are philosophy and psychology, education, jurisprudence, history, political science, economics, anthropology, Semitic languages, oriental languages, Celtic, Slavic languages, mathematics, physics, astronomy, as-tronomy, geography, chemistry, botany, bot-any, zoology, physiology, hygiene, anatomy, an-atomy, pathology and bacteriology, paleontology, geology, mineralogy, mechanical me-chanical and electrical engineering, civil engineering, Irrigation, mining and metallurgy drawing, architecture, architec-ture, agriculture, horticulture, entomology, ento-mology, milltan. science and tactics, physical education Tho successful applicants may begin be-gin their studies by enrolling in the summer session, which will be In progress from June 24 to August 3, or they may begin their work at Berkeley with the oponing of the regular reg-ular term, on August 16. The summer session of last year, with a faculty not onlv gathered from the University Univers-ity of California but from other leading lead-ing American universities, brought together at Berkeley a body of over 2,000 students. The approaching summer sum-mer session will probably be of similar simi-lar size. These Thompson scholarships are exclusively for Utah students. |
