Carrying wllh It a report of a sub-comlttee to the offect that the smoke nuisance In Salt Lake can be abated, the Commercial club presented to tho city council last night a petition asking that that bodv take immodlate steps to compel tho abatement of the nuisance Tho petition suggested that the council authorize the arrest and fining fin-ing of offenders every day in the week If necoBsary until they are compelled com-pelled to Install consumers and abate tho nuisance Tho petition was accompanied by an exhaustive report of a committee of the olub rclatlvo to Investigations made by It and the remedies suggest ed by It Tho matter was referred to the commltteo on public Improvements. Improve-ments. The alleged wanton waste of city water by residents of the city was a matter that brought forth a lengthy speech on the part of Councilman M E. Mulvoy. The matter was brought up by a request from tho Y M C A. for abatement of water taxes in the sum of $1,1S141. A statemont was made as to tho financial struggles of the association and all the members mem-bers of the council oxprcssed themselves them-selves as favoring tho abatement of the tax, but Mr. Mulvoy doclarod that other Institutions would be in with similar requests Then ho declared that the waste of water in the city was a crime, that moro water was wasted than was used by taxpayers and he expected to see tho time when the entire city would be on a meter basis The abatement was granted after Mr Mulvey's speech A petition from residents in the vicinity vi-cinity of the Oregon Short Line do-pot do-pot requested that R B. Matthews be ousted as a special officer for alleged overbearing conduct. This matter was referred to the police committee commit-tee and a hearing will be held In tho office of the chief of police at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon. The recommendation of the board of public works that the contract for constructing the outlet sewer canal to Great Salt Lake bo lot to TIbby & Jordan on a bid of $25,50S was laid over for one week as a result of opposition op-position on the part of Councilman F S Fornstrom and otherG who wanted want-ed to be shown where the right of way was to bo secured The annexation ordinance adding the two blocks between Eleventh South and Twelfth South and Fifteenth Fif-teenth East and Seventeenth East streets to the city was passed. oo |
