New Haven & Hartford H railroad, in which a score of lives were lost and 40 or 50 persons Hl were injured, is the third disastrous wreck which has occurred on H an Eastern road -within a month. fl There was a time when these disasters were more frequent on M .western railroads and the frequency was chargeable to inferior road- H bed and. equipment, but since the improvements havo been M made ou the Ilarriman and other lines, with the block signal in- H stalled, the number of wrecks has decreased, until today the west rc- m joiccs that the horrors are few and far between, fl It has been months since any kind of a wreck has occurred on K the railroads centering in Ogdeu and a number of years have passed B since the time of the last appalling los of life. Trainmen have lost H their lives, but there have been few passengers killed or injured, flj There will be accidents while there are railroads into which the H ' human agency enters as a factor in preventing wrecks, but with the H t changes being brought about by safety appliances, such as the block H fiignal, the liability to loss of life is being reduced to a minimum, so H much so that a wreck of the proportions of the one at Bridgeport, HH Connecticut, comes as a tremendous shock. |
