In the third inning of today's game between Philadelphia and St. Louis Nationals, Sherwood McGee, left fielder of the home team, assaulted Umpire Flnner-an. Flnner-an. The latter's lip was split and he was compelled to go to a hospital. In the second Inning Magee objected object-ed when called out by Umpire Rigler while trying to steal second. In tho second Inning Magee was called out on strikes by Flnneran. Magee threw his bat In the air and started away from the plate. For this exhibition Flnneran ordered him to the clubhouse. club-house. Mageo rushed at Flnneran, who stepped toward the player. The men clinched for a second. Then Magee stepped back and shot out his left with full force. Tho blow landed on. FInneran's mouth and he fell. Flnneran Flnne-ran finally mannged to get to his feet, with blood spurting from his lips. He made a rush for Magee, but was held by other players. Magee claims the assault was provoked pro-voked by Flnneran calling him an offensive of-fensive name when he was ordered off the field. Flnneran denies that he called Magee any names. Lynch Is Boiling Mad. NEW YORK, July 10. "I'll stop ths sort of thing," said President T. J. Lynch of the National league when the story of the Magee-FInne-ran fight in Philadelphia was read to him tonight "I shall take the first train for Philadelphia in the morning to investigate this case thoroughly. "It Is because Flnneran is a new umpire they just won't let those umpires um-pires get along." Flnneran was added to the National Nation-al league staff this year after five years' experience in the Eastern league. |
