Show International University Contest Won by the Fnglislr Queen's Club, England, July 11. With America and England tied, Philip Phil-ip John Baker of King's college, Cambridge, Cam-bridge, turned the scales for the home team by winning the mile run today. It was the most exciting international unlvorslty contest jet witnessed. Tho staying power of the Engllsnmen at long distance running with the assistance as-sistance they received from the Rhodes scholar, Putnam of Kansas, who won the hammer throw, decided the day The only running event captured by tho Americans was the half mile, won by D. M Preble of Harvard. Baker won the deciding event by five yards. Amid great enthusiasm at the finish the crowd swarmed on the field Tho band played "God Save the King" and Baker was carried away on tho shoulders of his comrades. Tho Harvard and Yalo men naturally natural-ly wero disappointed with the result, but had no oxcuso to offer or complaint com-plaint to make. Captain Kllpatrlck of Yale voiced the views of his men when he said- "There Is nothing to say except that the best team won." Captain Foster of Harvard expressed express-ed similar sentiments. |
