Bayer says, held him up in Glenwood park on last Wed-nesdaj Wed-nesdaj night and robbed him of $17 After Edwards had escaped the Ogden Og-den police, he accidentally came face to face with his alleged victim on board a Union Pacific train and was arrested at Evanston, Wyo., being brought back to this city this morning morn-ing According to the story told by Bayer, Bay-er, whose home is in Ohio, ho mot Edwards on the street last Wednesday Wednes-day and the two engaged in conversation conversa-tion J3ayer told his now acquaintance about coming west from Ohio to secure se-cure employment and Incidentally mentioned that he would have to soon get some kind of a job as he had only $20 left to live on Edwards told a story of havlngrcome west from Ohio also and said that he, too, was looking look-ing for a posiiibn. This strengthened the feeling of friendship between the two and when" Edwards proposed that they go to Glenwood park that evening even-ing Bayer consented The young men parted for a short time, Bayer going to his boarding house for suppor After supper he again met Edwards at an appointed place and the two went to the park At the park a third youth, as if by accident, ac-cident, was encountered, who Joined with them. Bayer did not think that the third party was even an acquaintance acquain-tance of Edwards, much less an accomplice ac-complice The third young man suggested that tho three go over and see a "beaver dam,'' which, he said, was located at tho east end of tho park The threo started for the supposed dam Back of the saucer track they stopped and talked and then suddenly one of the men struck Bayer with a slung-shot. felling him to the ground. When he regained consciousness he found that ho had beenrobber of ?17, threo dollars dol-lars not having been fouud by the thugB Bayer reported the matter to the police po-lice and romained in the city until yesterday, hoping that the authorities would be able to recover the money for him. Yesterday he left Ogden for Devil's Slide and, securing no work there, boarded the next train for Evanston Ev-anston On this train he came face to face with Edwards, who was employed em-ployed as news agent on the train. At Evanston ho reported the matter to tbe police and Edwards was arrested and brought back to this city. Edwards Ed-wards denies that he has ever seen Bayer. Other evidence, corroborating Bayer's Identification is said to have been gathered by tho police. |
