J. Gutke of Ogden, Utah, repre- 1 sentlng the Montello Salt company, Is J in Winnemucca and will remain a'few days for the purpose of acquainting I the .people here with the objects and investment possibilities of the com- pany. Mr. Gutke Is an old time rall-t rall-t road man who has been for many : years in the. employ of the Southern if Pacific company, and is well known jf here and at other places in Nevada. "The Montello Salt company owns f v. hat Is probably the largest deposit I of almost pure salt in tho world, situated sit-uated in western Utah and traversed , lor its entiro width by the Western Pacific railroad. Its property includes 40,000 acres of saline lands, the salt oed covering this entire area and ranging from four to eight feet in thickness. Analysis shows (he salt to be 99 per cent pure. The original locations lo-cations on this vast deposit were made by men employed in the con-c con-c ruction of tho Western Pacific in 39QG. In all about 2,000 locations were made and all of the locators are ar members of the Montello Salt com-':" com-':" pany, which Is a mutual concern. The property has been in litigation nearly four years, the deposit being claimed 1 by the state of Utah as an endowment for the state university. The case was fought through the state courts and taken to the supreme court of the United StaieG, which a few weeks ago decided in favor of the Montello Salt i company, giving it absolute title to this enormously valuable property. The principal place of business I Is Ogden. Utah, and about 50 per cent of the stock is held in that city. A S ? large part of the stockholders are railroad men employed on the Southern South-ern Pacific, who have held on to their t interests during the hard battle In the courts and who now bid fair to icalize so handsomely that some at Hi least will become rich.
