Show Legislators petition against Federal land-use proposals Forty members of the Utah House of Representatives, three more than a majority, signed a petition letter to the Utah Congressional delegation in Washington, D. C. during the recent special legislative sessions in Salt Lake City. The petition, as it were, was proposed by representative Garth Jones of Cedar City, requesting the defeat of the Federal Land Use Planning Bill No. 10294, a bill which both Utah Representatives in Washington voted to consider. The letter, directed to Utah representatives, as proposed and circulated by the southern Utah legislator read as follows: Dear Representatives: "We, the undersigned legislators of the Utah House, feel compelled at this time to commend the House of Representatives for their action in defeating House Bill 10294 (the Federal Land Use Planning Bill). "We take this action because we feel that there must be local control of any and all land use planning. We feel that the local people of any given area should have all of the options available to them. We feel that the Federal government should not put itself in the role of dictator forcing through legislation such as this with sanctions. We believe in land use planning IF the local political subdivisions involved have the authority to enforce the plan that would be developed by the people of the political sub- divisions. "We feel that you should be apprised of the feelings of our constituents to help guide and direct you in your legislative duties of representing the people of the State of Utah." |
