J It was discovered by Eugene Woolsey and Raymond Ketchum of Cedar City who saw 0 smoke coming from the Cedar City Post j - Office building and reported it to the Cedar l City policeman on duty and at the Lunt Hotel - at the time. 0 When volunteer firemen arrived at the scene they found a stack of empty mail sacks 1 on fire near the workroom area of the postoffice with the building completely filled 1 j with smoke. Postmaster Petty credits the fire ! 1 department for their response in limiting the , ! 0 amount of damage. ; The suspect is believed to have gained entry into the building through a window on i s . the east side of the building on the north side. Entry to the workroom was through the J lunchroom. Although no evidence has been found of anything missing, it is believed that the suspect handled mail that had been sorted J into boxes, but that he did not take any of the mail. Petty indicated that there was no J evidence that unsorted mail had been ban- died. I The suspect is also believed to have opened three packages. One containing perfume, one 0 containing two transister radios and one containing a dictionary. All of the items were 0 left in the building. The fire is supposed to have been started from packing from the package containing the transister radios. 0 When authorities arrived on the scene the fire was burning, was extremely hot and very 0 smokey. A major portion of the damage was from smoke, although mail sacks were 0 destroyed, a portion of the wooden floor was damaged and a part of the tile covering was scarred and burned. Crow apparently called FBI authorities in Salt Lake City and admitted his complication in the Cedar City breakin, but it was not until 0 the following morning that he met with authorities and turned himself in to the FBI officials. |
