Show , , ffi ' " n , ,,., , , rinTf 90-YEAR-OLD PINE VALLEY CHAPEL is said to be the oldest church in use today in the State of Utah. Built in 1867 by men who were mainly Vermonters, its design is almost pure New England architecture from the austere lines of the chapel to the bellfry tower perched on top like the bridge of a ship. Its chief architect was actually a ship builder. One Ebenezer Bryce, An Australian shipwright who was converted con-verted to Mormonism in the mil's. Bryce predicted: "Should you have a flood, the church will float, and should you have a cyclone it might tip over but would never break. The church can be reached by taking Utah Highway 18 from St. 'George north to Central, Washington County. Pine Valley is about six miles off the main highway. |
