Show Morton Metal on way to B L Crown v ;,Morton Metal has all but wrapped up the Cedar City Big League baseball championship as they held a commanding two game lead over Cedar Products after action Saturday evening. ,jMorton Metal suffered their second loss of the season, 6-4, at the hands of Bradshaw Chevrolet, but Cedar Products, setting in .second place also suffered a set-back losing to Mortensen Electric 7-6. .Standings through Saturday's play are: Mprton Metal ... ,' 8 2 Cedar Products ..6 4 BsadshawC 4 6 Mortensen . . . i. 2 8 Cary Cox of Bradshaw was on the mound for the victory over Morton Metal Saturday night. He gave up three hits in the first inning, but settled down and relinquished only one more hit in the . abbreviated game, called after five on a time limit. Kary Laird hurled the first four innings in-nings for Morton with relief by Kim Neilson in the fifth. Cooke of the Parowan Mortensen Mor-tensen Electric hamstrung Cedar Products in picking up their second victory of the season 7-6. Mortensen was sailing along with a 7-0 lead through four innings in-nings of play. In the fifth Cedar Products picked up six runs on three hits, three walks, and a hit batter and left the tieing and game leading runs on base. Cooke and his Mortensen crew held on through the sixth to ice the victory. Final games in the league action are scheduled this week and the climax will come in action Saturday night. At 6:30 Morton Metal and Mortensen Electric tangle with Bradshaw and Cedar Products winding up the season at 8:45 p.m. One of the top contests in the past week was a 3-2 victory by Morton Metal over Mortensen Electric, Mortensen held a 2-0 lead through the first three innings in-nings of play but Morton came through with three runs 'in the fourth to pick up the win and keep their league lead in tack. Kary Laird picked up the mound win with relief from Kim Neilson. He has 11 strikeouts, gave up five hits and three base on balls, Cooke suffered the loss giving up only three hits, He also had eight strikeouts and gave up only two walks. It was one of the top pitching duels of the season. In other action Cedar Products broke away from a5-5 tie to defeat Bradshaw 11-5 with David Middleton the winning pitcher; Morton Metal in another outing defeated Mortensen Electric 7-4 with Neilson and Cooke battling it out in that one. Steve Stoker pitched Cedar Products to a slim 6-5 victory over Bradshaw with Brent Smith turning in a fine mound performance, per-formance, despite the loss. Cedar City will host a three-team three-team double-elimination Big League tournament here July 27 through 31. It will be held in conjunction with a Senior Little League tournament. The Cedar City crew is the defending champions of the Big League tournament and a team will be selected to represent the Cedar City league in that action. |
