The party were attending the Lions International Convention held in Hawaii. Parowan Lions enjoy Hawaiian Tour PAROWAN-Four couples from Parowan Lions Club just returned from a memorable two week visit to the Hawaiian Islands. They were part of a tour consisting of Lions from Southern Uta'h. They participated par-ticipated in the Lions International In-ternational Convention held in Honolulu, Hawaii June 23, 24, 25 and 26. The Lions from Parowan at-; at-; tending were: Ron and Joan Mortensen, Frank and Arlene Adams, Ramon and Frankie Bentley and Ted and Marlene Burton. They were also joined by Don and Laura Burton of Lay ton. While in Honolulu, they visited the Pearl Harbor site, the Polynesian Cultural Center and toured downtown Honolulu and points of interest there. They then flew to Hilo on the big island of Hawaii and spent fishing excursion. They were really thrilled when they caught and landed a "Blue Marlin." The fish weighed 542 pounds and was 11 Vi feet long. It took them two hours to land it and get it in the boat. They plan on having it mounted and displaying it in the Gun and Rod Building at Parowan. Another exciting thing was that Ren Taylor from Cedar City, caught and landed a sailfish the same day. So the Utah Lions were a happy bunch. After leaving Kona, they flew to the island of Maui. This is a very beautiful island also. While in Maui tours were taken to the Iao Valley, one of the scenically most beautiful spots on all the Islands, containing a. volcanic freak, the Iao Needle which towers 1,200 feet above the valley floor. They spent a day in Lahaina. The old whaling town and first Royal Capitol of the Islands. Lots of time was spent on Kaanapali Beach. One of the most beautiful beaches on the Islands. From Maui the tour went to the Island of Kauai. While on Kauai they went on a boat trip up the Wailua River for a cruise to the Beautiful Fern Grotto where Islanders sung the "Hawaiian Wedding Song". Also tours to the Waimea Canyon, which is the Grand Canyon of Hawaii, Kokee, and Kaalau Lookout, the Spouting Horn and the Menahuni Fish Pond. The Island of Kauai is called the "Garden Island" and after visiting there, many of the tourists felt it was the most beautiful of the Islands. It was a real experience to travel on the 747 Airline jets of United Air Lines as well as the Hawaiian Air Lines, which flew the tourists from Island to Island. The trip lasted two weeks and will long be remembered by the members participating of the Parowan Lions Club. two nights and days there. While there they visited the Hawaii National Park where the big volcanos on Hawaii are located. They visited the Kilauea " Volcano, Halemaumau Fire Pit, Lava Tubes, Steam Vents, and Sulfur Banks. Also a forest of giant ferns, which was breathtaking. They then bused around the Island of Hawaii from Hila to Kona. On the way visiting the Orchid Garden and Nursery, Rainbow Falls, along the - Hamakua Coast to the Parker Ranch, which is the second largest cattle ranch in the world. At Kona, which is very beautiful, they had the thrill of their lives when the men from Parowan chartered a half-day deep sea |
