Show Big Game regulations governing 1976 Season The Board of Big Game Control, Utah's unique big game management system, met recently and established regulations governing the 1976 big game seasons. The 1976 regulations were established following statewide public meetings in which the Board listened to public sentiments sen-timents and observations. Prior to the public meetings, biologically based data was submitted to the Board in the form of recommendations from wildlife and land management agencies. The Board established some seven-day seasons in specified areas after careful consideration of biological recommendations and the input of sportsmen, cattlemen, woolgrowers, land owners and other private concerns. tend a hunter orientation course prior to the hunt. All permits will be hunter's choice. Bighorn Sheep-Again, requirements for application for . sheep permits are the same as those for moose applications. Only mature rams, those defined as being seven (7) years old and or having a Boone and Crockettt score of at leasat 144 points, are legal. Successful applicants will be required to attend a hunter orientation course. General Information Virtually all of the big game requirements in effect last year will be the same during 19.76. '. Hunter orange or international orange will be required again during all big game hunts. with the exception of the specified muzzleloaders and archery hunts. The requirement states that every hunter will wear a minimum of 400 square inches of the special color, distributed on the head, chest and back. . w be held at various dates in specified elk herd units. Applications Ap-plications may be made by mail or in person at any Division office of-fice prior to 5:00 p.m., August 20, 1976. Permittees will be selected on a drawing basis on August 27. Permits cost $15.00. The fee should not accompany the application. ap-plication. A total of 1, 875 restricted elk permits will be issued. Antelope-Applications may be made in person or by mail at any Division office before 5:00 p.m., July 30, 1976. A public drawing will be conducted August 6. Permits cost $10.00 and should not accompany the application. Moose-Deadline for moose applications is also July 30 at 5 : 00 p.m. The public drawing will be held August 6. Cost of permits is $100.00. This fee, in, the form of a money order or cashier's check, must accompany the application. Personal checks will not be accepted. The unt will be for bulls only. Buffalo-Requirements for application for buffalo permits are the same as those for moose. In addition successful ap-plicatns ap-plicatns will be required to at- September 11-19. A toatl of 230 permits will be available to resident hunters. Bull moose will be legal game for the 69 lucky permittees who draw. Season dates are set for September 11-26. As in years past, only limited buffalo permits will be issued. This year, ten hunter's choice permits will be drawn for' the once-in-a lifetime hunt held in the Henry Mountains. Resident hunters only may apply. Big horn sheep will be legal to those who draw the ten available permits. The San Juan County hunt will allow the taking of mature rams from September 18-October 18-October 3. DEER EXCEPTIONS Exceptions to the 11-day deer season were established in 12 deer herd units throughout the state. Those units which will conduct seven-day buck only hunts from October 23-29 are listed below: Vernon, 13; Price River-White . River, 32; Gordon Creek-33; Joe's Valley-34; Marysvale-Circleville-49; Kanosh-55; North Beaver-56A; South Beaver-56B; Beaver-Mineral-56C; Parowan-Cottonwood-57A; Parowan-Main Canyon-57B. and East Zion, south part-59. DEER In general, the Board established a one-man-one-deer policy for the buck only season. General deer season in Utah will open October 23 and remain open through November 2 (11 days). In twelve (12) areas, however, there will be a seven-day hunt conducted from October 23-29. Three hundred (300) hunter's choice control permits will be available and a possible 450 post season antlerless control permits were proposed. 1 Both archery and muz-zleloader muz-zleloader enthusiasts will hunt deer from August 21 through September 6. Muzzleloaders will be restricted to hunting in four specified areas. Buck only is the rule again. OTHER BIG GAME The genral open bull elk season will be open from September 29 to October 17. Fifty archery hunter's choice permits were also made available this year. Pronghorn antelope may be hunted during 1976 from September Sep-tember 4 through September 12 in all but the Box Elder unit. The Box Elder unit hunt is set for OTHER SEASON DETAILS Other Season Details Elk-Open bull elk permits may be purchased in person or by mailed application July 26-August6, 26-August6, 1976, at any Division of Wildlife Resources office. The $15.00 permit fee must accompany ac-company the application. Fifty (50) hunter's choice archery permits will be issued for open bull elk areas. Application Ap-plication dates are the same as above. The elk archery season for the 50 permittees will be August 21-September 6 and will be held in all open bull areas. The 50 hunter's choice permits will be drawn from all archery elk permits purchased. The restricted elk seasons will |
