Show April 25th atSUSC Vocational Day attracts 800 Students Over 800 students from junior and senior high schools in Utah, Nevada, and Arizona will visit Southern Utah State College April 25 for annual Vocational Day activities. Three areas of competition com-petition will be sponsored by a trio of SUSC departments including contests in business, agriculture and home economics. In agricultural competition, com-petition, high school students will compete in soil and livestock judging in activities held at the SUSC Valley Farm located three miles west of Cedar City. Competition will be held in both team and individual events. "We estimate that about 340 students from southwestern south-western Nevada and southwestern south-western Utah will participate par-ticipate in contests at the Valley Farm" V. R. Magleby, chairman of agricultural activities, said. Another several hundred students are expected to meet for contests sponsored by the SUSC Business Department in areas of first and second year typewriting, shorthand, filing, accounting, and spelling. "We have invited over 30 schools to compete in these contests," Larry A. Olsen, chairman of business activities, ac-tivities, said. Visting business students will be treated to a talent show prior to the annual awards assembly when the winners of the SUSC business contests con-tests are announced. In the third area of competition scheduled for Vocational Day, some 100 students will visit the SUSC Family Living Center to vie for honors in original toy construction and divinity-making. divinity-making. Ada Carpenter, Chairman of the SUSC Department of Family Life, said that several demonstrations would be held during the day in addition to the on-campus candy-making contests. The demonstrations include "Brazilian Embroidery," "Huggables -- Soft Toys," "Levi Patchwork," "Make it Yourself." "Making Pita Bread," and a "Weaving Demonstration." "SUSC Vocational Day, with competition in areas of agriculture, business and home economics, has long been a traditional event," Mrs. Carpenter said. "We are very pleased to have the students visit SUSC and to have them compete in areas in which they excell during the regular school year." |
