Show What about actors making political statements? Robert Redford's comments concerning Utah's Senatorial delegation-and the corresponding backlash-have been interesting for us to follow. We have enjoyed people's reactions to his description of Senator Jake Garn as "a fool" and Orrin Hatch as "dangerously slippery." Some have commented: "Why should he, an actor, be given so much ink whenever he makes a comment about politics? Good question. But would the questioner be so forceful in his question if it was, say, John Wayne making the comment on politics? Or perhaps if the political statement was more to their liking? Everyone, including actors, have the right to comment on anything they want in this country. That is one of the things we love about it. While we tend to think a little more of our Washington delegation than our newly acquiring actor-in-residence, we will defend his right to say what he likes. And defend with equal furvor, a Utahn's right to disagree. |
