Dramatic Classic SUSC production of "A Doll's House" "It's the hardest role I've ever played. The last scene is especially difficult; I don't know if I'd have the courage myself to do what Nora does," Southern Utah State College student Becke Wilenski says about her part as Nora in the upcoming SUSC production of "A Doll's House." Henrik Ibsen's dramatic classic which deals with a woman's metamorphosis from a doll-like creature living in her husband's house to a self-realized woman will be presented at SUSC April 14-15, 20-22. Performances will begin each evening at 8:15 p.m. in the SUSC Auditorium. Tickets are available by contacting the SUSC Box Office (phone 586-3636) from 1-5 p.m. daily and from 1-8 p.m. the days of performance. per-formance. Play director R. Scott Phillips notes that "A Doll's House" is the first of Ibsen's plays to be produced at SUSC. "Even though the play was written in 1879, it is still very relevant today," he said, "it is a sensitive play individuality within the confines of a stereotyped social role." "Some people have called 'A Doll's House' a play about woman's liberation. I don't think that it is; it's just a very personal story about a woman who suddenly realizes her own needs," Wilenski, a theater arts major from Granger, explains. "Part of the difficulty in playing the part is the change that takes place in Nora over a three-day period," she said. "At first she is happy. It is Christmas and she has three wonderful children and a very successful suc-cessful husband. By the end of the play she is not her husband's 'little lark' but a woman who has recognized her own unsatisfied needs and must take drastic measures to find her individuality." in-dividuality." Nora's husband, Torvald, is played by Ken Cook, a SUSC theater arts major from Brigham City. Nils Krogstand, a lawyer and moneylender who plays a major part in Nora's dilemma, is played by Alan Baird, Centerville. Other important characters in the development develop-ment of the pay are Mrs. Linde, played by Michelle Brinton, Sandy, and Dr. Rank, played by Grant Gottschall, Salt Lake City. The SUSC cast is rounded out with Jan Frasier, Bountiful, Robin Steep, Payson, and Rick Pasco, Cedar City. The set and costumes for the SUSC Campus-Community Campus-Community production have been designed by Fred C. Adams. Technical aspects of the production are under the direction of Joseph Gilg with lights designed by student Keri Muir. "A Doll's House" is a very vital production, Phillips said. "We believe that southern Utah audiences will enjoy -- and think about -- this performance." |
