Show LEAF Members hold Meeting The April breakfast meeting of the Cedar City LEAF Club was Saturday, April 8 at the Town and Country Restaurant. The 26-minute documentary film, "For This Land is Mine," was shown. The film is narrated by . William Prince who starred in the Academy Award winning film "Network." The new film, recently received from LEAF National Headquarters in San Diego, is being promoted by LEAF in order to educate and make more people aware of Land Value Taxation and the Henry George philosophy. "Many are acclaiming it the best economics film in a decade," Earl Hanson, local secretary said. Support was given Saturday for the tax proposals developed by the LfciAF Steering Committee to be presented to Governor Matheson's State Tax Revision Committee. They include: --Urge constutional amendments to remove the property tax from buildings, improvements and personal property, with revenue decreases to be made up by increased taxes on land values. -'Require county assessors to keep assessments current each year and terminate State reappraisal programs. -Terminate the present requirement that a portion of property taxes paid by electric utility companies must be paid to irrigation customers rather than to the County Treasurer. It is felt that while the subsidy for irrigation may be appropriate ap-propriate it is not appropriate ap-propriate for the State to direct that the expense must be borne by local governments. govern-ments. It was suggested that zoning features in California's Califor-nia's land use planning may be attractive. The Club will obtain applicable California laws regarding zoning changes from agricultural land. |
