Honors i Achievement Awards garnered by students Outstanding Achievement Awards for the 1977-78 school ! year at Southern Utah State College were presented Gaylen 1 Gurr, Parowan, and Norma Joiner, Spanish Fork, at the ! Thunderbird Awards Assembly here Thursday evening. i The coveted" awards were presented at the close of the traditional awards assembly, held to honor students who have i achieved high academic standing or who have made i significant contributions to the college in departmental or co- j curricular activities. j Gurr is a senior chemistry major who has been accepted into j the University of Utah School of Medicine. j Teaching at Utah Tech j Joiner completed requirements for a BS in accounting and 1 business administration two quarters ago and is currently ! teaching at Utah Technical College, Provo. She was the 1 recipient of the Outstanding Student in Accounting award last 1 year at SUSC. i Several other students, organizations, and college personnel i were also honored at the assembly. i ! Education Honors j; In the School of Education, Pestalozzi Awards for out- 1 standing teacher education graduates were awarded Ann L. I Decker, Cedar City, for secondary education, and Harvey J. 1 Estes, Battle Mountain, Nevada, for elementary Education. Decker was also named the Outstanding Student in Business Education in School of Business and Technology departmental j jj award presentations. 1 1 Another Cedar City student, Mike Cardon, was named the i Outstanding Student in Business Administration, with Patrick i D. Wilson, Richfield, named the Outstanding Accounting Student and 1977-78 recipient of the Wall Street Journal Award. 1 Both Cardon and Wilson are seniors. I Richard Wittwer, a senior from Salt Lake City, was named the Outstanding Student in Industrial Education. V Arts and Letters 1 In the School of Arts and Letters, Cedar City seniors Andrea $ Shirts and Alan Lewis were named the outstanding students in 1 communications and the arts, respectively. 1 Departmental awards in the School of Science were awarded jj Nancy Sprague, Castro Valley, Calif., for life sciences and 1 Kent Richman, a sophomore from Bountiful, in natural I sciences. 1 Sprague was also honored last year as the Outstanding I Student in Life Sciences. She is a senior. J Four departmental awards were made in physical 1 education. Tom Kingsford, Jr., a senior from Cedar City, was named the Outstanding Physical Education Major and Cathy I Price, a freshman from Vernal, was named the Outstanding ! Dance Student. ! 1 Outstanding Athletes 1 1 Laura Bailey, Nephi, and Gil Rodrigues, Los Angeles, were i named the Outstanding Female and Outstanding Male if athletes. Both Bailey and Rodrigues are seniors. if During the awards assembly, a "very special presentation" & was made honoring retiring SUSC President Royden C. If Braithwaite and his wife Alice. A song written by student Dave g Clemons and slide presentation compiled by students G'Ne jr McEldowney and Cathy Price preceded the presentation of a jf clock and school flag to the Braithwaites. 8 Melinda Wilson, 1978 SUSC valedictorian, was introduced to j the audience. Ms. Wilson has maintained a 3.99 grade point ft average throughout college and will graduate with a BS j degree in June 2 commencement exercises. i f Roy Wilcock, Coordinator of SUSC Food Services, received i the ASSUSC President's Award, traditionally given a non- i f student for outstanding service made to members of student i . government. j Thunderettes Honored 1 I A special Booster Award was presented the SUSC Thun- 1 . derettes for representing SUSC in performances at the Los 1 J Angeles Forum and at all home football and basketball games 1 1 during the year. ? The Prestige Arrow Award, presented each quarter to a i f campus organization, was awarded Sigma Delta Omicron for i the contributions made by the SUSC home economics club. j The student organization was also named the spring quarter j winner last year. j " The Prestige Spear, annually awarded a campus group for ; J overall contributions made during the school year, was r presented to the SUSC Drama Club. ! V Jeff Snedeger, Richfield, was named the Most Improved Student of the year. The political science and mathematics 3$ major is a sophomore. At the conclusion of the program, special student body j? awards were presented. Jeff Duncan, student body president, l received a special Leadership Award. The senior com- W munications major is from Vernal. if Mark Slack, a sophomore business administration major g from Cedar City, was named the Personality of the Year. Another Cedar City student, Cyndi Woodbury, a sophomore g business administration major, was named the Woman of the K Year while Man of the Year honors went to Monte Widdison, a senior accounting major from Bountiful. |
