Show Vagabonds hitCedarCity By Jay Wamsley "Cedar City's our home now. We arrived Sunday at 2 p.m. and we will be leaving Wednesday morning, but it is our home while we are here." And even though he may see hundreds hun-dreds of other towns, many somewhat similar to Cedar City, Ted Easter means what he says. Ted, you see, is crossing the country on his bike along with his nephew Le Roy Hill. Oh, and Ted is 72 years old; Roy is 56. "We will cover 5800 miles before he hit New Orleans in December," Easter said during a lunch break at the local KOA. "We have come 849 miles so far. Left California The pair left Pismo Beach, Calif, their home, May 1. The two retired bicyclers plan to visit St. , Louis, Kansas City, Chicago and other major sites, along with Orderville, and Winslow, Siiverton, Larned, and other not-so-notable sites, during this trip. "Cedar City is a nice little town," Easter observed. "We are not particular par-ticular where we stay, we are home wherever we pitch our tent. But Cedar seems like a real nice place." The well-tanned pair make their way along with ten speeds, each pulling a small two-wheeled trailer behind. They said they are able to move along pretty good, except when countered by wind or mountains. 3 days behind "We are three days behind thanks to a bad wind out west here," Easter said. "In West Nevada we also had some bad hills and winds. We had to walk; couldn't ride in it. "If we come across steep mountains moun-tains we just walk-we don't try to ride it. You never know what is coming over the next ; hill, so there is no sense pooping yourself out. "Besides, we are in no hurry." Easter said they like to "meet people and see the scenery." It rekindles your faith in mankind, Easter added, to see how good common people still are. Love mountains "And we love the mountains, especially the clear, drinkable streams. It takes us a couple of weeks to get used to that doctoi ed-up water when we get back home. Wednesday morning the pair headed up Cedar Mountain, to US 89 (continued on page 3) k . By 1981, Easter said, the retired Californians plan to visit 49 states anbd all the provinces of Canada. They are on the road for eight months a year, from May to December. I During the Bicentennial year, they made their way from Pismo Beach to New York's Braodway via Philadelphia and Boston. A Europe excersion "has been considered" Easter said. "We will hit New Orleans on December 21, plan to spend Christmas Christ-mas there," Easter said. "Then we will take the train back. During the off-season we practice in the hills around Pismo to keep in shape. Easter, a former cabinet maker, said he got the urge to take to his two-wheeler two-wheeler while he was "sitting around home." "I got to thinking I am not getting any younger and I better see some of the world. "And besides, I am in no hurry." |
