Show Dustoffthe 'ol trombone When's the last time you played a musical instrument? That question was posed this week by Professor Joe Lamoureux, Director of Bands at Southern Utah State College, as he began an effort to develop a "Community Band." Cedar City and the surrounding area, has a tremendous heritage in music and for many who practiced diligently through their high school and college days have found that the opportunity to continue to play has been limited. The purpose of a community band would be to give "community members" an opportunity to join with college students, high school students and selected Junior High School students in a series of summer concerts. Professor Lamoreux is suggesting that the facilities and the equipment of the College be made available but that the concerts con-certs be presented on the Cedar City Park on Sunday evenings and for special occasions. An initial meeting and rehearsal session has been scheduled from 7 to 9 pm Thursday evening, June 8 at the Band Room at the SUSC Music Building. All those who would like to participate are encouraged to attend or to contact Prof. Lamoureux, 586-3143. It is the intent of Prof. Lamoureux that other music directors, such as Larry Wright and James Dunaway would take turns directing the concerts. Further involvement could include in-clude service clubs to help transport tran-sport equipment to the city park and to help with chairs for seating, etc. Not one to let any "grass grow under his feet" Prof. Lamoureux is suggesting that a special concert could be ready for presentation by Sunday, June 18, Father's Day. We believe that the program has merit. It's further efforts to knit the community and bring it together for a common effort. It deserves support. |
