Show Pa rowan PTA conduct Business Meeting Student Art Show. As a result of her work at SUSC, she was named the Most Outstanding Student in PAROWAN - The Parent-Teacher Parent-Teacher Association of the Parowan Elementary School held a business meeting on Thursday, January 20, at the elementary school. Mrs. Christine Robinson, PTA President, welcomed the parents and teachers to the meeting . Elections were held for a committee to nominate candidates for next years offices. Nominations committee members will include: Floyd Matheson, principal; Douglas Vincent, president elect; Jacque Dalley, Marie Green, and Boyd Robinson. Mrs. Robinson then introduced in-troduced Dr. Roma Jensen, a teacher a the elementary, who socializes in reading skills. Mrs. Jensen presented material to parents to help them stimulate the reading skills of their children. A list of ten tips for parents was given by Mrs. Jensen; activities which facilitate development of reading skills in children, included were: 1) talking to children-no matter how young; 2) listening to your children; 3) taking children places; 4) reading with your children; 5) having children read to parents; 6) schedule a regular time each night for home study; 7) avoid the comparison trap; 8) praise children to be sincere; 9) Keep children healthy; and, 10) break largo tasks into smaller tasks. Dr. Jensen went on to explain how parents can help their children develop interest in reading. Activities Ac-tivities such as providing a bulletin board space for messages, riddles, jokes, etc.; providing a variety of books and providing reading time in a comfortable setting greatly assist in developing these essential skills. Dr. Jensen also noted that it is most important that parents read to their children, and that research has shown that the father is the most influential in-fluential person in the development of reading skills by setting the example in his reading habits and by reading to the children. Making visits to the library and providing records or cassettes with accompanying ac-companying books are also activities which stimulate reading skills. Mrs. Anna Mecham then presented "The Growing Circles of Man" to those in attendance. Audience participation helped in the presentation of this flannel board story which will be presented to the 4th, 5th, and nth grades.
