Show Redmen host Cavemen Friday It's split at home and split on the road for Cedar High School. Those are the words of Coach John Neilsen assisting the Rcdmen's standing in Region Six and their potential of gaining the State tournament berth. The Redmen have two remaining home games and four on the road to finish out the second half of the season. "What we are playing for now is a spot in the state tournament and I'd like to go in at least fourth place in the Region," Coach Neilsen said. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. The Cavemen have lost only one game this season, that that game top ranked Provo. The Cavemen picked up a pair of wins during the week. They defeated Dixie at St. George by 10 and clobbered Payson Friday night by a score of 92-50. "AF will be tough, but they can be beat," Coach Neilsen stated. Against Payson the Cavemen had four men in double figures including Beck with 15, Burgess with 16, Rachman with 13 and Larson with 10. Beck and Burgess are the second and third leading scorers in the Region. For the Redmen they got 18 points each out of Kerry Cox, the fourth leading scorer in Region Six and by Nathan Johnson. But it was in a losing effort, in St. George in a traditional battle with the Flyers. The other home game for the Redmen is late in season. Wednesday, March 1, and will be against Timpview. The on the road games that Coach Neilsen feels the Redmen must split in order to gain a tournament berth are as follows: Wed. Feb. 8: Payson Fri. Feb. 17: Spanish Fork. Fri. Feb. 24: Pleasant Grove. Fri. March 3 : L Springville. "With three wins I believe that we will go to slate. With two wins there will probably be a playoff and we don't want to get involved in a playoff," Coach Neilson ' stated. In other games played Friday night, Springville defeated Timpview by a score of 55 to 49 and Provo downed Pleasant Grove by a score of 50-29, Springville was led by Larson with 17 points and Everett with 11. Timpview had two men in double figures: Magleby 15, and Neuenswqrden 15. Pleasant Grove tried slowdown tactics against the league leading Provo Bulldogs, but Provo ran away from them in the final period. At the end of the third qqarter it was 28-20 for Provo. In the final period Provo put 22 points on the boards to run away with the win. Durrant outscored the entire PG team with 33 points. Ratliff scored 12 for Pleasant Grove. On the docket for Friday night will be: American Fork at Cedar City; Dixie at Payson, Provo at Timpview and Spanish Fork at Pleasant Grove. Springville draws the league bye. |
