Show I l I Rollo" I Glyphlcs ByKHenRollo 1 The question of drugs as it relates to our young people -is a constant concern of parents. A report released recently by the Utah Department of Social Services indicates that the concerns are not unfounded. The figures indicate that 15 percent of Utah teenagers have used marijuana in the past six months. Our children do come in contact with drugs, and not only marijuana but other drugs as well. The survey identifying the use of marijuana was conducted by the Utah State Division of Alcoholism and Drugs and the Utah State Board of Education. Those same sources provide information for parents related to alcohol and drug problems in a pamphlet "Questions and Answers About Drug Abuse." The 50-page booklet prepared by the federal government includes information in-formation on sedatives, stimulants, hallucinogens, narcotics, 'alcohol and tobacco. General information in-formation on all drugs and such topics as treatment available for abusers and prevention are included. Free copies of the booklet are available by writing Utah State Division of Alcoholism and Drugs, P. 0. Box 2500, Salt Lake City, Utah 84110. Here we are in February, already. One twelfth of the year already past. Did you know that there are only 271 shopping days until Christmas 1978 - that's excluding Sundays and legal holidays. But February is a busy month, none the less. For example February is National Advertising Recognition Month, American Heart Month, American History Month, American Music Month, Boy Scout Month, National Cherry Month ( I don't see how that fits, but it is); and Afro-American History Month. Today, Thursday, February 2, is Ground Hog Day. That's really significant. The theory is that today the Ground Hog will come out. If he sees his shadow, and the prognosticators indicate that he will, we will have an extended winter season. If he doesn't, well the theory is that good weather is just around the corner. For my part I hope he see's his shadow. This is a historical month with the celebration of two great presidents -- Abraham Lincoln, Feb. 12, and Washington's Birthday, Feb. 22. That's not good enough, however, so in order that schools may close, that government might come to a standstill, that those who can will have a day off, we celebrate the two jointly with a Monday holiday which falls on Monday, Feb. 20. This month is a sentimental sen-timental month. February 14 is Valentine's Day and that falls on a Tuesday. No holiday of course involved. Religiously there are those who will celebrate Ash Wednesday, Feb. 8. It is the beginning of Lent which continues through March 25. Then the youngsters come into play with Scout Month and Scout Week, but in addition we will celebrate FFA Week February 18 through 25th. The concluding special event of the month is Bachelor's Day, which falls on Monday, Feb. 27. Now here's an opportunity to remember the single men in your life. |
