Show CSU Trustees to Confer Honorary Doctorate at Commencement Exercises Mrs. Esther Peterson, Assistant Assis-tant Secretary of Labor, will be awarded an honorary Doctor Doc-tor of Humanities degree at the 70th annual College of Southern Utah Commencement Commence-ment June 3. Mrs. Peterson is CSU Commencement speaker-She was appointed Assistant Secretary of Labor for Labor Standards in August, 19G1, by President John F. Kennedy. In this position, Mrs. Peterson Peter-son has responsibility for most of the labor standards activities activ-ities of the United States Department De-partment of Labor. She is a native of Utah. The Board approved a contract con-tract with John Laurence Seymour Sey-mour of Las Vegas to accept from Mr. Seymour an extensive exten-sive collection of books, music scores, records, and Victorian furniture to be housed in a special room in the new CSU library. Mr- Seymour will also provide a trust fund of $7,000 to assist with maintenance main-tenance of the collection. CSU Gets U. S. Grants The Federal Department of Health, Education, and Welfare Wel-fare has approved a grant of $31,108 for the Work-Study program at the college for the period July 1 to December 31. ESTHER PETERSON and heard a report that another an-other grant will be. forthcoming forthcom-ing from Title I of the Economic Econ-omic Opportunity Act for community com-munity service projects. A total of $5,000 will be provided pro-vided through the Coordinating Coordinat-ing Council of Higher Education Educa-tion ahd $7,000 through the University of Utah. In connection with the CSU-Utah CSU-Utah State University experiment experi-ment station, approval was given for a preliminary research re-search proposal involving the improvement of productivity of range sheep through breeding1, breed-ing1, the control of reproduction, reproduc-tion, and management. Approval was given for the leasing of extra space in the -United States Steel Building, now occupied by CSU administrative admin-istrative offices, to the Southwest South-west Media Center. The Board recommended the formation of an advisory art committee to approve all art objects acquired by the college. col-lege. Faculty Appointments Approval was given for the appointment of nine faculty members for the 1967-68 school year. They include Preston Larry Leonard, Dar-rell Dar-rell K- Loosie, Rulan D. Woodbury, Wood-bury, Herbert Ludwig, Bonnie Kay Bishop, Harold Boyce, Parley Par-ley Nyman Winn, Evar Leon Chidester, and James S. Taylor. Tay-lor. A three-year leave of absence ab-sence was granted to Professor Theron Ashcroft, and a one-year one-year leave of absence to Professor Pro-fessor Lyman Munford. Out-of-state travel requests were granted for Professor A. W. Stephenson to travel to Sun Valley, Idaho, June 3 to 8, to attend the Utah Bankers Association Convention, and for Professor A. T. Challis to attend the American Library Association Convention in San Francisco, Calif. June 24 to July 5. The Board saw a demonstration demon-stration of new audio-visual equipment in use in the CSU Education Department. |
