The CSU T-Bird baseball 5 crew lost both ends of a ( double-header on their home il field Friday afternoon by t. scores of 8 to 0 and 3 to 1. The westerners came back i Saturday to issue the final 'ii blow in a 14 to 5 contest that il blew up on the T-Birds in the noon when the T-Birds were held to a single hit but managed man-aged to come up with a run. CaJ Western went on to the 3 to 1 victory despite Isom throwing an excellent game against the visitors in allowing allow-ing only five hits in the contest. con-test. CSU scored in the first inning inn-ing when Dave Meyers belted the only T-Bird hit, then came on in the inning to score on a wild pitch. A single and a double for Cal Western scored one run in the first frame, and the 1 to l. deadlock was broken in the third 'on a double, an error,, with the score coming on a ball run in by the second sec-ond baseman with the runner on third after a cought fly. Final run came in the seventh sev-enth inning with another unearned un-earned run. Saturday, the Westerners teed off on starting pitcher Larry Eyre for four runs in the first inning of play. Eyre was lifted after the runs had scored with no outs and two runners still on base. Charles Norton, a freshman, came off the bench to quench the fire and had the Westerners Western-ers scrambling for hits throughout the remainder of the contest through the ninth inning, when Peairs, the second sec-ond sacker, belted a three run homer off the tiring Norton. Norton was lifted at that point, and Stephonis came on to finish the game but not without giving up another 6 runs to put the game out of reach. Following that opening inning, inn-ing, the T-Birds came back to score two runs in the third on two walks and a double by Reid Kimoto. That brought the score to 4 to 2. il first and ninth inning. A pair of left-hand-ad broth-n broth-n ers, Jim and Dale Allen were o on the mound for Friday's wins while Saturday the Wes- 0 erners sent three men to the n mound in capturing the vie- 1 tory. The Westerners, ranked 20th by the NCAA this season, took I their current season to 18 and I 6 with the three victories. The Thunderbirds turned in a rather poor showing in the series failing to produce an offense against the tough pitching of the California crew and turned in only a mediocre performance defensively with a number of costly errors and erratic play. The T-Bird pitching was fair for the series, with Wynn Isom and Charles Norton producing pro-ducing the better mound performances per-formances in the three game series. The Thunderbirds gave an appearance of standing in awe of their California rivals as they committee several mistakes mis-takes that are generally attributed attri-buted to clubs of lesser status than college ranked ball. In the opener Friday against theolder of the Allen brothers, the T-Birds managed to produce pro-duce six hits but could not come up with any runs in the shutout. George Stephonis was "" on the mound for the T-Birds in the contest and he was relieved re-lieved by Blaine Barney. The Westerners pushed over three runs in the first inning of play with only one hit, a double. They added three more in the pixth on three hits and capped the victory in the seventh with a pair of runs, again with the benefit of only one hit.
