Show Serviceman Takes Thiry-day Leave with Parents Jerry E. Boyns, petty officer third class, United States Navy, arrived in Cedar City, Saturday, April 5, to enjoy a 30-day leave with his parents, Rev. and Mrs. Raymond L. Wilson. Jerry's home, away from home, for the past nine months has 1 been the USS Walker, destroyer escort. He was assigned to the , Walker in May of 1957 as a seaman sea-man first class, electronics striker, strik-er, after finishing a course In electronics at Treasure Island, U.S. Naval Base, San Francisco. He flew from San Francisco to Pearl Harbor, the home port of the USS Walker and boarded the ship May 22. I From May until January his, time was sp-nt on a tour of the Western Pacific: Japan, China. HongKong, Philippines, Okina- Iwa and neighboring islands, ex- perlenclng the fury of four ty-( phoons while on the cruise. The Walker returned to Pearl Harbor on Jan. 8 of this year. Examinations for advance-! ment In rating was given aboard the ship to 32 men in November of 1957 and on Jan. 11 Jerry was notified by the captain of the Walker, F. E. McKenzie, that: he had been promoted to Petty officer third class, in the field of electronics, with the highest average on the ship.
