Show City Reaches Lease Agreement On Operation of Hotel El Escalante A five-year lease to operate Hotel El Escalante was signed Wednesday afternoon following: a special session of the Cedar City Council, according to Mayor Arnold Anderson. An-derson. The City Council approved a lease agreement with Berdell Ruesch who has been operating the hotel in bo- half of the city since it was first purchased from the Utah Parks Company. New operator of the hotel is a native of Virgin, Utah. He was educated in the Washington County schools and graduated from Hurricane High School. j A long time employee of the Utah Parks Company, Ruesch began be-gan work with the organization in 1916 and has been with the : company until taking over the management of the hotel in February Feb-ruary for the city. He lias worked his way up through the ranks, beginning as a kitchen helper, serving as a chef, in i executive chef for the company's operations opera-tions and finally as manager of the hotel prior to its purchase by the city. Ruesch will take over the operation op-eration of all facilities of the hotel ho-tel with the city to receive three and a half per cent of the gross receipts from the operation. Un-1 Un-1 der the agreement Ruesch will be expected .to maintain services at present standards and to ' maintain the Inventory at the hotel. Any improvements or renovations renova-tions of the hotel facilities will he the responsibility of the lessee, les-see, according to Mayor Anderson. Ander-son. Contracts will be drawn up In the near future to complete the transactions with a turnover, date of May 1 set by the City, and Ruesch. Ruesch Indicated that he will operate the hotel on the same basis as it has been operating for the past several years. Of prime Importance to him will be the catering service of the hotel ho-tel which has become of such importance to this area. Immediately upon acquisition of the hotel Ruesch Indicated that two conventions are on the agenda for catering service. First will be the Utah-Idaho District Key Club convention slated for tho last week end in April. In May the hotel will be the center of activities for the Utah Junior Chamber of Commerce convention at which approximately approxi-mately 750 are expected to attend. at-tend. In addition the hotel will work closely with the Utah Parks in accommodating regular tours during the summer months.
