Show Woman Workers Must Decide S. S. Question Whether a woman worker orl wife who is age 62 but not yet 65 files for social security benefits bene-fits Is a decision she must make, according to Kesler T. Powell, district manager for the Social Security Administration at Prove, Pro-ve, Mr. Powell stated that technic ally trained personnel In his office of-fice will gladly discuss the pros and cons pt the question, but will not recommend a course of action. The decision Is a personal matter the woman herself de-I de-I cides after she considers her particular par-ticular circumstances. Widows or a dependent mother qualifying for benefits on a deceased de-ceased worker's record have no decision to make, since there Is no reduction In benefits for filing fil-ing at or after age 62. and before be-fore age 65. However, a woman filing for her benefits on her own work record at age 62 will get 80 of the monthly amount available for her if she waits to age b5 to claim Deneius. ine age 62 wife of a husband receiving benefits will get only .75 of the monthly amount she can expect If she waits until she is age G5. In case a woman worker or the wife of a retired insured worker chooses to take benefits In a reduced amount before she reaches 65, she will continue to get a reduced amount even after af-ter she is 65. Although reductions for women wo-men workers and wives who file for benefits right at age 62 equal 80 and 75, respectively, of the full benefits possible by waiting to file at age 65, It does- n't mean that women filing at age 63 or 64 experiences the same reduction. Actually the reduction is figured on a number-of-months-under-65 basis. The reduction re-duction for a woman filing at age 62, 36 months under age 65, will be twice as much as that cf a woman filing within 18 months of age 65. The woman worker who draws benefits before she is 65 does not suffer a disadvantage for having drawn benefits unless she lives over 12 years after she is 65. For a wife, she suffers no ' disadvantages until nine years 1 after age 65, and, if her husband precedes her in death she will ' receive full widow benefits. Mr. Powell stressed that those who want further information should contact their social secur-ity secur-ity office by telephone, mall, or , in person. |
