Show Retirement Announced by Forester Announcement of the retirement retire-ment of Leland D. Heywood, assistant as-sistant supervisor of the Dixie National Forest, was made by Supervisor Albert Albertson today. to-day. Mp. Heywood's retirement will become effective May 4, after af-ter more than 38 years of active duty with the U. S. Forest service, ser-vice, the supervisor said. Mr. Heywood received appointment appoint-ment as forest ranger on the old Sevier Forest May 1, 1919. He served In this capacity until Mar. 1, 1936, when he promoted to the assistant supervisorshlp of the Fishlake National Forest with headquarters at Richfield. On Mar. 1, 1937, he was promoted to supervisor of the old LaSal Forest with heaquartera at Moab, Utah. He served in this capacity until November, 1944, when the LaSal Forest was consolidated (Cm tlamed Bock rage) LXLAND HITWOOD LELAND HEYWOOD (Continued from Page One) with the Uintah Forest, at which , tirrk he transferred to Cedar City i as assistant supervisor of the I combined Dixie and Powell National Na-tional Forests. Owing to his In-tlmate In-tlmate knowledge of these two forests he was especially well qualified to help work out the many problems Involved In the consolidation. Supervisor Albertson says that Heywood has been a real teammate team-mate to him In handling the overall administration of this large unit of national forest lands, where activity in timber sales and recreation, along with range reseeding and road construction con-struction has been rapidly Increasing In-creasing since the consolidation. He has been largely responsible for the reseeding of approxl. mately 63.000 acres of range lands on the Dixie and old LaSal National Forests. His assignments assign-ments at time of retirement were range management, game management. man-agement. Improvements, maintenance main-tenance and construction, recrea. tlon. watershed managemena, englnerlng, lands, special uses, and reseeding. His efficient service, ser-vice, as well as his pleasant personality per-sonality will be greatly missed by all of his fellow workers. Prior to entering the forest service Mr. 'Heywood served his country as a soldier during World War I. He enlisted In the army July 11, 1817, and was discharged Feb. 14. 1919. His assignment as-signment was with the 20th Engineers, En-gineers, which was a forestry regiment which saw service with the American Expedition forces In France. Mr. Heywood Is a senior mem. ber of the Society of American Foresters, a member of the American Society of Range Man. agement, the Cedar Post No. 74, American Legion, the Cedar City Lions Club, and the LDS church. He has been active in all of these organizations throughout his adult life. |
