Show Danger Signal lMst summer this writer visited a very attractive and , apparently progressive city in Montana, but lost all en thusiasm because of the condition of the approach to the community. The highway for a distance of two or three miles lead-ins lead-ins Iron the city was so littered with debris, probably front careless handling of garbage, that one had the feel-bis feel-bis Chat there was very little civic pride in the community, communi-ty, a reeling that if the approach to the city was so , onlunnpt the city itself could not be much of a place. Scat-Ccmd Scat-Ccmd along the side of the highway were cardboard boxes, rangjng from very old to new, milk cartons, beer cans, orwspapers, wrapping paper, and other assorted debris. Tins was the reaction after having been favorably impressed im-pressed by the community on another approach. Certainly travelers entering the city over that littered approach would get an even worse impression and would not be inclined in-clined to want to even stop there, let alone remain for any length of time. Cedar City Is rapidly getting into just such a situation toecaose of a similar condition on the approach to the city Cram the south, all the way from the garbage dump road to the city limits. The approach can be termed nothing none than an unsightly mess, and if something is not done about it, both in the way of cleaning it up and then keep-ins keep-ins it dean, the city cannot expect to hold its reputation as a dean and attractive city. Nothing can be offered within the city that will overcome over-come that unfavorable first impression of an unsightly approach. Any time you drive from Cedar to the garbage dump turn off, you can see new litter dropped along the highway high-way and blowing along the side of the road, and this added add-ed to the accumulation of weeks and months past can do nctbrrg: but create an unsightly condition. lack of enforcement can be blamed for a major por-thm por-thm of the problem because city ordinances cover the situation adequately. Of course there should be enough cftrie pride on the part of the people who are so careless with their hauling that little law enforcement should be needed. That pride, however, seems to bo lacking so it seems imperative that the city put a little enforcement lata effect. |
