Show Tigers Open Season with Victory Over Cedar I Hurricane High School base, nine, defending Class B baseball champions of 1956, started the season off with a bang In Cedar City Monday afternoon, handing the highly touted Cedar Redmen a 3 to 2 loss. The Tigers of the south capitalized capi-talized on two hits and two errors er-rors to score three runs, two in th? first and one in the third and then hold on, to post a win in the seven inning stint Cedar Redmen collected a total to-tal of 12 hits, compared to only four for Hurricane, but was unable un-able to bunch the hits, spreading them throughout the seven Innings In-nings of play. Gary Anderson on the mound for Cedar allowed only four hits, collected two for himself and sent seven of the visitors to the bench via the strikeout route, but It wasn't enough. In the first Inning lead-off man Benson filed out to Quinn at short. Wilson, outstanding second sec-ond baseman for Hurricane, then walked to put the first opponent on base. He moved to second as Hinton occupied first on an error er-ror by Jon Isom on Third Base. Judd, catcher for Hurricane, then blasted a double, the only extra base hit for Hurricane, to score two runs. Cedar bounded back with a single score in the first by Eric Gardner. Leading off Gardner singled and scored when Bevan Corry tripled with two out. Hurricane's other score came In the third frame. Wilson led off the batting with a single Anderson An-derson then went to work and struck out the next two men; however, Wilson was able to score when the shortstop miscned on a drive off the bat of Sta-hell. Sta-hell. The Redmen lef; 15 men stranded on bases during the seven inning fracas, three In the bottom half of the final Inning. In-ning. Hurricane left only five men on bases. A rallv In the final Inning 'iy Cedar almost caught the Tigers. Anderson and Corry had singled sin-gled and Kenny Jones, pinch hitting hit-ting for Oulnn, was walked to 'nad the bases with two outs. Travis Nelson stepped to the nlate and took two straight bnlls from Barber on the mound. Wilson Wil-son was then called to the mound to complete the Inning. Nelson worked the pitcher to a full count but on the final, crucial cru-cial pitch, went down swinging for the final out |
