Show New Superintendent Named at Bryce Canyon National Park Edward J. Kurtz, assistant superintendent su-perintendent of Natchez Trace Parkway, Mississippi-Tennessee-Alabama, has been appointed superintendent of Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah, Daniel B. Beard, director of the Southwcat Kegion of the National Park Ser- j vice, announced today at his of-1 lice in Santa t'e, New Mexico. I At Bryce Canyon, Kurtz will succeed Louis W. Hallock, recently re-cently transferred to the super-1 intendency of Lassen Volcanic National Park, California. Hal-lock Hal-lock had served as superintendent superinten-dent to Bryce Canyon National Park since WW). A native of Salida, Colorado, Kurtz is a graduate of Colorado i State University, with a major in forestry. His college studies were interrupted in 1942 when he entered the U. S. Army. During World War 11, Kurtz served with the parachute engineers engi-neers in the 82nd Airborne Division Divi-sion in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, Holland, Belgium and Germany. In the summer of 1946, Kurtz began his career in the National Park Service as a seasonal park ranger at Rocky Mt. Nation al Park, Colorado. And in 1947, after his graduation, he acepted his first permanent assignment at Isle Koyal National Park, Michigan. Michi-gan. Since then, he has steadily advanced in the National Park Service. Kurtz served at Isle Royale until un-til his transfer to Kocky Mountain Moun-tain National Park, Colorado, in 1952. His subsequent assignments assign-ments included tours of duty at Colonial National Historical Park, Virginia, and Natchez Trace Parkway. During this time, he was promoted to district park' ranger, chief park ranger, and assistant superintendent, his ! present position at Natchez Trace Parkway. He has also attended training schools conducted by the National Park Service. Kurtez will assume his duties as superintendent of Bryce Canyon Can-yon on December 19, 1965. j |
