I Father Participate la Survival Training Among the eight participants from the State of Utah to recently recent-ly complete Air Force Explorer Survival Instructqr Training Encampment En-campment in the high Sierra Mountains from the Stead AFB. in Nevada were George Banks,! Sr. and George Banks, Jr. of Explorer Ex-plorer Post 2333 of Cedar City. They are members of the Cedar, Breaks district of the 'Utah National Na-tional Parks Council, BSA. Mr. Banks reports they spent five days at the Stead AFB and in the mountains covered with about two feet of snow to com-! plete the survival training program pro-gram In trapping, skinning and cooking meat, dehydrated fresh foods, night and day navigation, edible plant life, fqrest procedures, proced-ures, hunting techniques, map reading and orientation, trail techniques, fire building, back packing, shelter selection and construction, signals and signal fires, and helicopter demonstra-, tlons. v I One of the purposes in Explorers' Explor-ers' learning to become proficient profici-ent in survival techniques is toe them to use their knowledge in training others in their areas, as well as extending the opportunities opportuni-ties to these Explorers in a possible pos-sible career field. Douglas S. Wlgg. Captain, US AF states that "This type of training may give us the engineer engi-neer that perfects the first space station or the doctor that develops devel-ops the ciye for cancer. Some-where, Some-where, someone created the spark of interest that started each of our great men in the scientific field along their road of vocational endeavor. On military mili-tary Installations the explorers can see the latest scientific developments, de-velopments, their world of tomorrow, to-morrow, today. Because of this, we in the Ar Force do our good deed for Scouting by giving the Explorers a preview of their world of tomorrow, and in turn we help the Boy Scouts of America Amer-ica develop better men for tomorrow to-morrow from the boys of today." Scouter George Banks, r., and Explorer George, Jr., will extend their training when they put on a survival course at the Cedar Breaks, roundtable to be held on De. 15, reports Howard Foulger, Cedaj Breaks district commissioner commis-sioner of roundtables. The Air Force has plans for two more survival training encampments en-campments in the spring during April and June, Mr. Banks reports. |
