Show LOW WATER CONDITIONS Excellent Fishing Predicted For Southern Utah on Season Opening Utah's general anglng season is scheduled to open Saturday, and lakes and streams in southern south-ern Utah are expected to get more than their fair share of i sportsmen for the event. Saunder (Bid) Clark, director; of the southern Regional office of the State Fish and Game dept. indicates that prospects are better this year than last as a! result of lower water levels. That's the case for the opening, : but prospects for the entire sea-1 sons are not so favorable with I the low water conditions possi- j bly resulting in considerable summer kill as storage waters! are drained down. A run-down of the most pop-1 ular waters in the southern Utah area follows: MINERS VILLE RESERVOIR a year-round open water, buti should absorb much of the open-1 ing day pressure, especially if the angler is after large fish. ) Rainbow trout here are ranging I froi.i 11 to 23 inches In length and up to 7 pounds in weight, j j Larger fish are not uncommon. I This irrigation reservoir may suf-1 for some drawdown as the sum-. mer progresses. j PUFFER'S, MIDDLE KENT'S and ANDERSON MEADOWS LAKES rated fair to good. Rainbow in i all three will range from 8 to 14 inches in length with larger fish to be found in Puffer's Lake. In addition, anglers will find some cutthroat trout in Anderson Ander-son Meadows. LITTLE RESERVOIR to be heavily stocked and opened to fishing again this year. Prospect good. PANGUITCH LAKE samples have not been taken from this water as yet but prospects are for good fishing on the opener and throughout the season. In general this water should yield better fishing this year than last when creel checks showed angling an-gling to be "below par" on the long term average. PINE LAKE should be good for the opening and through the season. This water had a good carry over of fish from last year and presently boasts rainbow trout in the 11 to 16 inch range. Some may go as high as two pounds on the scale. Some brook trout wirl also be taken. Water is to be stocked with catchable size fish prior to the opening day. This water was recently "remodeled" "remod-eled" by the Department and new dike work is holding well. TROPIC RESERVOIR expected to be good for the opener. Contains Con-tains cutthroat and book trout in the 11-12 inch class with rainbows rain-bows in this water ranging between be-tween 8 and 15 Inches. Recent survey on this water shows the rainbow and brook trout to be in excellent condition with cutthroats cut-throats listed in pour condition. A good supply of catchable size fish will be planted in this water prior to opening day. Some drawdown draw-down of this reservoir expected. WIDE HOLLOW RESERVOIR rates fair to good for the opener and throughout the season. Reservoir Res-ervoir contains a good stock of rainbow trout ranging 11 to 15 inches long. No water problems forecast. Reservoir will be stocked stock-ed heavily with catchable size rainbows prior to season opening. open-ing. NEWCASTLE RESERVOIR sche-duled sche-duled for severe drawdown but should be good to excellent early ear-ly In the season. Reservoir contains con-tains rainbow trout ranging from 11 to 16 inches. YANKEE MEADOWS RESERVOIR RESERV-OIR rated slightly poorer than ' last season but still should be moderately good fishing. Rainbow Rain-bow trout here will range from 12 to 18 Inches each. Some brook trout in this water go as high as two pounds. This water is rated excellent for fly fishing late in the season. PARAGONAII RESERVOIR slated for extremely low water during the 1903 season. Presently has a good carry over of rainbow rain-bow trout stocked as fingerlings these fish will now hit the tape at 8 to 18 inches each, j NAVAJO LAKE shallow water here dictates management on the basis of annual winterkill. This water will be heavily stocked with catchable rainbows before season and should be excellent on the opener. DUCK CREEK SPRINGS will be heavily storked before season. sea-son. Will rate good to excellent for success. This water contains brook, brown and rainbow trout with some tUh expected to hit the 10 to 12 pound mark. ASPEN-MIRROR LAKE will be heavily stocked for the opener and should rate as excellent especially during the early season. sea-son. UPPER ENTERPRISE RESERVOIR forecast excellent for early season fishing. Good populations of 10 to 14 Inch rainbow with some larger fish expected to be I taken. This water will be drawn extremely low later In the vear. LOWER ENTERPRISE RESER-, RESER-, VOIR rates fair to good for opening. Rainbow trout here from 9 to 12 Inches each with a few larger fish. Extreme drawdown draw-down expected. BAKER RESERVOIR should yield fairly good fishing to the early season angler. Both rain-I rain-I bow and brown trout are present I with rainbow ranging from 10 to It Inches each and browns hit- ting the tape at between 6 and 18 inches. Browns will be hard to catch. KOLOB RESERVOIR has extremely ex-tremely low water level at present. pre-sent. May have had some win- I terkill. This water was heavily I stocked with fingerling rainbow trout in 19C2 and if not wlnter-killed wlnter-killed shoul provide excellent fishing. |
