Show Open Play Thursday at 1 p.m. Against Illinois Team With a win over the defending national champions of the Na-1 tional Junior Collegiate Athletic Association, under their belts,! the College of Southern Utah! Thunderbirds left early Wednes-1 day for the national final at Grand Junction, Colo. The tournament will bring together to-gether eight regional winners in i double elimination event that will be concluded Tuesday, June 4. The T-Birds defeated Boise Junior Jun-ior College this year to win their second straight Intermountaln Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball championship; then bounced back to win the Region One NJCAA championship in a best two of three came series over the defending national champions, Phoenix Junior Col lege. The T-Birds won the first game 16 to 8, uropped the second by a score of 8 to 6 to the Phoenix crew, then staged a ten run rany to come from behind and dep-feat dep-feat Phoenix 17 to 8 to win the right to enter the national tournament tour-nament this week. Over all the T-Birds have a record of 21 wins and five losses for tn se;'rn Coach Clco Petty will take 16 men with him into the natiaonal playoffs. Only one man who has been with the squad this year will not make the trip. That is Don Roberts of Cedar City. Roberts Rob-erts has another appointment a wedding date that will keep him from making the trip, the coach explained. I The T-Birds open at 1 p. m. ( Thursday, Memorial Day, against Thornton Junior College of Har-ivey, Har-ivey, 111. j Opening the tournament will I be the Texas champions against jthe Long Island Aggies of New York. These four teams make up one four-team bracket. Should the T-Birds win the opener on Thursday they will meet the winner win-ner of the Texas-Long Island game at 5 p. m. Friday. Should they lose they would meet the loser of the same game at 10 a. m. Friday. j In the other four-team bracket are Wilmington, N. C. against ; Manatee, and Bascone, Okla., against host Mesa Junior College of Grand Junction. P.adio station KSUB of Cedar City has made arrangements to get telephone reports on the first two games, Thursday and Friday. A report, made by the Grand Junction radio station will be given midway of each game and then a report at the end of each contest. Should the T.Birds advance ad-vance beyond the first two days, arrangements are being made to have the remaining games broadcast, broad-cast, it was reported. Coach Petty will take six pitchers pitch-ers into the tournament and his strong chuckers could make the T-Birds a strong contender.
