Show City Council Holds Special Session On Municipal Airport Improvements Apparent Errors in Two Low Bids Leave Final Contract Undecided A special session of the Cedar i City Council was called for Wednesday Wed-nesday evening to consider further fur-ther action on bids for construe-1 tion of the new runway and other oth-er Improvements at the Municipal Munici-pal Airport. Bids were opeened Thursday evening and W. W. Clyde and Company was the apparent low bidder for the project. The Springvllle firm submitted a bid of $306,019.42 which was $113,-215.93 $113,-215.93 below the engineer's estimate esti-mate of $419,235.35. A study of the bid submitted by the firm, however, revealed that the contractor had left out a substantial item in his bid oil to be used in the mulch finish and the special council meeting was called to consider action. It was reported that the firm would probably reject the bid and not sign a contract. Young Company Second Low Second low bidder on the project pro-ject was L. A. Young and Sons of Richfield with a bid of $312,736.-80. $312,736.-80. However, here again the engineer en-gineer felt that the bid was in error and this was also taken under un-der consideration. Six bids in all were received and of the six only one exceeded exceed-ed the engineer's estimate of $119,000. Bids were as follows: W. W. Clyde and Co., Spring-ville, Spring-ville, $306,019.42. L. A. Young and Sons, Richfield, Rich-field, $312,736.80. Whiting Bros. Const. Co., Las Vegas, $366,266.67. V. C. Mendenhall Co., Cedar City. $369,230.33. Whiting and Haymond, Spring, ville. 5371,485.78. Joint Project The project is a cooperative effort between the Federal Aviation Avia-tion Agency, the Utah Aeronautical Aeronau-tical Commission and Cedar City CCipCriatiuit. A recent bond election was held in Cedar City in the amount of $140,000 for the city to meet its nhare of tne costs, Mayor Ku-men Ku-men Gardner stated. The low bid was accepted subject sub-ject to qualification of the bidder. Construction is expected to be signed within 10 days and terms of the contract call for the completion com-pletion of the project in 240 working days. The contract calls for the construction con-struction and paving of a new NE-SW runway with adjoining taxiways at the airport. The runway run-way will be 6100 feet In length and 150 feet wide. The runway will replace the 5500 foot runway now in use. The new runway will be shifted 15 degrees to the West to improve conditions. Other Oth-er aspects of the contract includes in-cludes installation of runway lights, vault equipment, removal of obstructions, relocating the present Iron County Road, relocate relo-cate Coal Creek channel, Insall cate Coal Creek channel, install |
