Chicago have gone to four Utah club members who have distinguished distin-guished themselves in the 1953 National 4-H Clothing, Field Crops, Girl's Record, and Poultry programs. Summaries of achievement of the state winners are as follows: Fler all-around outstanding record rec-ord in home economics has brought a high honor to Marilyn Drake, 18, of West Jordan. She has been named state winner in the 1953 4-H Girls' Record program. Her reward of a trip to the 4-H Congress Con-gress was provided by Montgomery Montgom-ery Ward. During her 8 years in 4-H Club work, she made 379 new garments and articles and remodeled 33, including in-cluding blouses, skirts, a coat, and dresses. She refinished a chest of drawers, kept the home grounds clean and tools in their proper places. Marilyn always had the cooperation of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Drake, in the planning and carrying out of her projects. She was recognized for her outstanding leadership in both 4-H Club and community activities. activ-ities. Through all-around efficiency in crop production on the 14 acre farm of his father, Jay Gibson, Mont Gibson 15, of Ogden was named state winner in the 4-H ' Field Crops program. A coveted trip to the 4-H Club Congress provided pro-vided by International Harvester Co., is his reward. Mont was able to achieve that recognition through careful attention at-tention to every phase of crop production such as keeping farm, machinery in condition, selection and treatment of seed, and scientific scien-tific soil management. Mont has raised beets, potatoes and tomatoes as field crops, renting rent-ing l'-ii acres from Bob Penman, his 4-H Club leader. In 1952, Mont won the Frank M. Browning watch award for being the outstanding out-standing crop boy in the county, a By making 200 garments suitable suit-able for work, school and parties, Connie Christensen, 18, of Morgan, Mor-gan, was proclaimed Utah champion cham-pion in the 4-H Clothing project, an honor tnat included a trip to the 4-H Club Congress, made possible pos-sible by The Spool Cotton Co. Garments made by Connie varied var-ied from skirts and blouses to dresses of her own design. Among Connie's other achievements are canning, food planning and home improvement work. She has been an outstanding member in the Fancy Five 4-11 club during her 7 years of membership. Connie graudated from Morgan High school and also attended the University Uni-versity of Utah. a a Bill Marston, 15, son of Harold Marston, of Helper, has been selected se-lected as state winner in the 1953 Poultry Achievement program. His trip award to the 4-H Club Congress was provided by Ford Tractor Dwision, Ford Motor Co. His record shows that he has carried a poultry project for 3 years, raising 200 chicks per year. He and another boy gave demonstrations demon-strations on making salad plates from poultry products with vegetables. vege-tables. These won recognition at the community and county fairs. Despite the hours of effort devoted de-voted to the poultry program, Billy found time to serve in all the offices of the Thrifty Gardeners' Garden-ers' 4-H Club. He carried projects proj-ects in gardening and junior leadership. All these programs are conducted under the direction of the Cooperative Cooper-ative Extension Service. |
